What is metabolism, really?

Metabolism is every chemical process your body uses to turn food into usable energy. It runs constantly — even while you sleep — powering breathing, circulation, and cell repair. Only a small share of it is under your direct control.

Why does metabolism slow down?

Metabolic rate tends to decline gradually with age, mostly because muscle mass drops rather than because of age itself. Sleep quality, thyroid hormones, and sustained stress all influence how efficiently your body uses energy.

BMR, RMR and NEAT explained

BMR is what you'd burn lying completely still for 24 hours; RMR is a slightly more practical version of the same measure. NEAT covers everything outside formal exercise — walking, stairs, fidgeting — and it varies between people far more than most expect.

What a blood sugar spike does

When you eat carbohydrates, glucose enters your bloodstream and your pancreas releases insulin to move it into cells. Large, fast spikes are often followed by a dip that can leave you tired and hungry sooner than expected.

What is GLP-1?

GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide-1, is a hormone your gut releases after you eat. It prompts your pancreas to release insulin and signals your brain that you've had enough.
